when it matters most

Who We Serve

We provide targeted aid to immigrants whose lives have been upended by the current mass detention and deportation drive.

What We Do

We deliver rapid, direct assistance — including legal assistance referrals and commissary funds for those detained at Delaney Hall and elsewhere — cutting through bureaucracy to meet urgent needs.

Our Commitment

We believe that mutual aid can provide an essential lifeline to those who have been cut out of the governmental social safety net. Your donation will be directed where it is needed most — quickly, transparently, and with deep respect for the dignity of every person we serve.

The Values That
Guide Our Work

01

Everyone Deserves to Live with Dignity

No matter one's circumstances, background, or status, every person deserves to be treated with respect and to have their fundamental human needs met. Dignity is not a privilege — it is a right.

02

Everyone Deserves Due Process

The right to fair treatment under the law belongs to everyone. We are committed to supporting those who have been denied due process and to advocating for a just system that protects all people equally.

03

Families Must Be Kept Together

The forced separation of families causes profound and lasting harm. We work to minimize family disruption and to support those whose loved ones have been detained or removed from their communities.

04

Community Care Is Our Strength

When neighbors support neighbors, entire communities grow stronger. We believe in the power of collective action and that small acts of solidarity ripple outward to create lasting change.

Targeted Financial Assistance
Where It's Needed

Legal

Legal and Bond Assistance

Navigating the immigration and legal system without support can be overwhelming. We connect individuals with legal resources and, where possible, provide funding toward legal fees and representation.

Detention

Commissary and Communication Assistance

For those detained at Delaney Hall and other facilities, basic necessities are often out of reach. Our commissary fund ensures that detained individuals can access toiletries, food, and communication with their families.

Flexible

Flexible Support

Rapid response to critical short-term financial needs like medical and legal costs, living expenses and other unexpected costs for families, detainees and those recently released.

Neighbors Helping
Neighbors

SOMA Community Cares was founded by a group of South Orange and Maplewood residents who recognized that crisis — particularly for immigrant families — demands an immediate, compassionate response.

As immigration enforcement actions escalated, through our work outside of Delaney Hall and within the community, we saw families torn apart, detained without adequate support, and left without the resources to navigate an overwhelming system. We established SOMA Community Cares as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to mobilize our community's generosity and direct it where it is needed most — quickly, transparently, and with deep respect for the dignity of every person we serve.

We work in close collaboration and partnership with many amazing organizations working towards the same goal of ensuring families and those detained are supported peacefully and with dignity. Our work is guided by the belief that our community leaves no one behind.
